Chemical Properties

Isobutylene is a colourless gas with a mild petrol-like odour. Its molecular formula is C4H8, and its molar mass is 56.11. This gas is highly flammable and soluble in ethanol as well as ether. Being one of the four isomers of butylene, it is a four-carbon branched alkene. 

Boiling Point:

2-Methylpropene has a low boiling point of around -6.9 degrees Celsius under standard atmospheric pressure which means it easily changes from a liquid to a gas when heated. This property is vital in applications like fuel production and chemical synthesis.

Melting Point:

At room temperature, 2-methylpropene exists is a gas, so it doesn't have a melting point as such. Its transition from a gas to a liquid occurs when it is cooled below its boiling point. Due to this 2-Methylpropylene is generally used in its gaseous form 

Density

The density of 2-Methylpropene is roughly 0.566 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). This density is lower than that of water (1 g/cm³), indicating that it is less dense than water. This property is advantageous in industries like gasoline production, where lighter hydrocarbons are preferred.

Solubility:

2-Methylpropene exhibits limited solubility in water due to its nonpolar nature. Its molecules do not readily interact with the polar water molecules, making it sparingly soluble in aqueous solutions. However, it is highly soluble in organic solvents such as hydrocarbons and ethers, which share its nonpolar characteristics. This characteristic is valuable in various chemical processes and in synthesizing other compounds.
